UGC issues list of 24 fake universities
As many as 24 universities across India have been declared fake by the University Grants Commission (UGC), as on April, 2018. According to the commission, these universities were functioning in contravention of the UGC Act in different parts of the country. Uttar Pradesh tops the list with eight such universities. States like Delhi, West Bengal, and Odisha are next in the list with seven, two, and two fake universties each.
A list of 279 fake technical institutes too was released last year. These institutes were offering technical and engineering courses without the permission of the regulator. With 66 such colleges, Delhi had topped the list followed by Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra.
UGC along with AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) releases a list of fake institutes every year, thus, warning students about the same before the new academic sessions commence in April. One of the officials was quoted as saying, "We send the list of unapproved and unregulated technical institutions to concerned state authorities for taking appropriate action against such institutions", reported a national daily.
To prevent students from applying to such institutions, AICTE issues notices to schools for not taking its approval. According to information, public notices are also published in newspapers notifying students not to apply for admissions to such unapproved institutions.
