Mystory@Era Sahai: How I selected my college and course
When I was in class 10, I realised that math and science was not my cup of tea. I picked up Commerce stream because I found History and Political Science, very boring. I soon realised that this certainly is the right choice, as my answers in Economics were read out in class. I would often discuss chapters with my father, who was also an MA in Economics and was working in the NSSO, Planning Commission. He had worked as an assistant to Sh.Mahalanobis, the father of Indian Economics.
However none of the above reasons were responsible for me to take up Economics honors in Delhi University. I had a genuine liking for the subject and would love to study it. My understanding of the concepts was good.

How I cracked college admissions
I was too thrilled to pass my BA (H) Eco in three years, when I found that it was pretty tough course with a very low pass percentage in Delhi University. I got a third division, and all doors for a postgraduate were closed on me. The only option left was Delhi School of Economics and to seek admission, I needed a score of 60 percent.
I joined MA Economics through correspondence from Meerut University. I also joined Nursery Teachers Training course from South Delhi Polytechnic. I was not eligible for any B.Ed course, because of my third division in college. In my MA I scored 53 percent and now I was eligible for all entrance tests for B.Ed.
My mother was a teacher in Delhi administration and always felt that a teacher's job is the easiest to pull off in Indian families. I cleared entrance exam for B.Ed from Dayal bagh University in Agra. I stayed in the hostel and completed my course. My performance was excellent, I was a topper in the teaching practice. It was only then that I realised that I had an aptitude for a good teacher.
I joined a Senior Secondary School in Delhi as PGT of Economics. Since then there has been no looking back. I worked as a PGT of Economics in different schools and various states of India. Since my husband was an Army officer, we always have to change states because of his transfers. Today my husband has taken retirement from the Army and I am still working as PGT of Economics. Within a year they made me the HOD of Social Science. I was also serving as a coordinator for a prestigious International School that won an Award by the British council of Delhi. I enjoy my work and cherish the love and respect of my colleagues and school management.
I definitely made the right choice. At times, a suggestion given by someone who is either a close one to you or a well-wisher, works for you. I wish I didn't have long gaps in my career due to my husband's frequent postings. Because then I would have made it as a Vice Principal or maybe a Principal. What worked for me is that I only worked as a PGT of Economics.
