Top 50 Research Institutes in India 2024 - Like each year, the Ministry of Education and the Union Education Minister, Mr Dharmendra Pradhan, has announced NIRF 2024 Rankings. These ranks are announced for several categories including the best Research Institutes in India. Based on NIRF Rankings, 2024, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru is the best Research Institute in the country followed by the Indian Institutes of Technology, Madras, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, at second and third places. On this page, you will find the top 50 research institutions in India based on NIRF 2024 Rankings along with their scores and ranks. Usually, the Ministry of Education announces NIRF Rankings for 13 categories including EngineeringManagementPharmacyMedicalArchitecture and Law, etc. However, this year, they have introduced three new categories - Open Universities, Skill Universities and State Public Universities. Check them out in the table below.

NIRF Ranking Parameters with Weightage for Top Universities in India 2024

NIRF selects universities every year based on several parameters. Each parameter has a certain weightage and universities are evaluated out of a total score of 500. The NIRF ranking parameters along with their assigned weightage are listed below -   

  • Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) - 100 Marks 

  • Student Strength including doctoral students (SS) - 20 
  • Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR) - 30
  • Combined metric for faculty with PhD (or equivalent) and experience (FQE) - 20
  • Total budget and its utilisation (CBTU) - 30 
  • Research and Professional Practice (RP) - 100 Marks 

  • Combined metric for publications (PU) - 30
  • Combined metric for quality of publications (QP) - 40
  • IPR and patents: Filed, published, granted and licensed (IPR) - 15
  • Footprint of projects and professional practice and executive development programmes (FPPP) - 15
  • Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) - 100 Marks

  • Percentage of students from other states/ countries [Region Diversity (RD)] - 30
  • Percentage of women (WF) + (WS) + (WA) - 25
  • Economically and socially challenged students (ESCS) - 25
  • Facilities for physically challenged students (PCS) - 20
  • Perception (PR) - 100 Marks 

  • Peer Perception: Employers and research investors (PREMP) - 25
  • Peer perception: Academics (PRACD) - 25
  • Public perception (PRPUB) - 25
  • Competitiveness (PRCMP) - 25
  • Graduation Outcome (GO) - 100 Marks 

  • Combined % for placement, higher studies, and entrepreneurship (GPHE) - 40

Q:   What was the closing rank of Calcutta University for CSE?

A:
Calcutta University accepts WBJEE scores, folowed by WBJEE Counselling for admission to the BTech programme. Calcutta University cut off 2023 was concluded after the release of WBJEE Mop-Up Seat Allotment Result. As per Calcutta University WBJEE cut off 2023, the last round closing rank for BTech in Computer Science and Engineering stood at 1207 for the General All India category students. 
For other categories, including ST, SC, OBC and PWD, the last round cutoff remains the same i.e. 1207 for CSE at Calcutta University. Candidates can refer to the table given below to check out the round-wise WBJEE cutoff 2023 for CSE programme: 
 

Q:   Can I get BTech admission at Panjab University with JEE Main rank of 100000?

A:

Panjab University cutoff for BE course is based on JEE Main scores. The counselling concluded after the relase of Round 5. Candidates looking forward to Panjab University admissions must have a valid score in JEE Main in order to be eligible for further process. Tabulated below is the round wise closing ranks for Panjab University cutoff for BE courses for candidates to check whether they are eligible as per the cutoff or not:

A:

For last year, the closing rank for BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering was 15851 which is very close to this range. This was for the General category under the All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one cannot afford to score less than this. With this rank, there is a probability of getting admission however, the cut-offs keep changing year on year, it's advisable to try to score better ranks to increase your chances of admission.

Q:   Can I get admission to BTech in Computer Engineering course at Jamia Millia Islamia [JMI]? My rank is between 5000 and 10000.

A:

For last year, the closing rank for BTech in Computer Engineering was 7216 which is very close to this range. This was for the General category under the All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one cannot afford to score less than this. With this rank, there is a probability of getting admission however, the cut-offs keep changing year after year, it's advisable to try to score better ranks to increase your chances of getting admission to the BTech in Computer Engineering course offered at the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI).
