NAAC Accreditation

Have you ever thought what actually NAAC accreditation stands for? Why it is important and useful while selecting any institute? Here, this article discusses all the points involving the importance of same.

An autonomous body, NAAC i.e. National Assessment and Accreditation Council was established under the surveillance of University Grants Commission (UGC) of India with a mission to elevate and assess the progress of higher education in India whist keeping the quality of the same unscathed. By amalgamating self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiatives, NAAC accreditation has achieved its purpose of emerging as a defining power.

Students, fresh passed out from schools, like lost puppies in woods, with no knowledge of any institute must firstly check for accreditation of an institute for inquiring the quality of the same. Since an accreditation clearly reflects the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities of an institute, students who take the initiative of scrutinizing an academy, can review it as well as identify all its key internal spheres.

It's through accreditation that a student learns about the quality of education offered by an institute as well as the depth of its resources. Also, it's only via accreditation that a campus gets to enhance and boost its collegiality.

Since 2015, UGC has made mandatory for all educational institutions to get their accreditation done and those without one shall have to face severe repercussions. Also, NAAC has recently issued a cautionary notice stating that NAAC accredited institutes, if found providing false or misleading information to students by projecting themselves as recipients of higher grading by the council or showing themselves as accredited institutes even after the validity period is over, can face strict action by NAAC.

Students wondering how an institute is awarded an NAAC accreditation must know that at present there are 7 main criteria's for assessment, namely:

  • Curricular aspects
  • Teaching-learning and evaluation
  • Research, consultancy and extension
  • Infrastructure and learning resources
  • Student support and progression
  • Governance, leadership and management
  • Innovations and best practices

Any college applying for an accreditation is judged and scrutinized by a committee comprising integral members such as:

  • Head of the institution
  • Few senior administrator officers
  • 3-8 teachers
  • 1-2 members from the management
  • One or two nominees from local society
  • 1 teacher coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

So next time you think of enrolling yourself in a college, do surely look for its accreditation level.
