The programmes will have 25 seats each. The cognitive science programme would be highly interdisciplinary in nature, based on theories and methods from neuroscience, artificial intelligence, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, and anthropology among others.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) has launched two new master’s programmes in the department of humanities and social sciences. The institute informed of unveiling an M.Sc. in Economics and an M.Sc. in Cognitive Science from the session of July 2020. Both the programmes will consist of 25 seats each. According to the institute, the cognitive science programme would be extremely interdisciplinary in nature, based on theories and approaches from artificial intelligence, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience among others.

The programme is likely to assist IIT-D students understand the design and operation of the human mind. Students will cultivate essential abilities and understanding needed to make intricate information, machinery and systems more accessible. Many companies need such skills and understanding to solve practical problems. So, apart from pursuing a career in academia, students will be able to work at the junctions of academic-industry connections.

With the beginning of these two programmes, the institute looks to exploit the proficiency of its faculty members from a number of sectors, to encourage teaching and research while also creating the crucial associations with industry. The Economics programme aims to offer advanced training in economics with an emphasis on quantitative skills. The curriculum is planned to give exposure to bigger issues pertaining to developmental challenges in India and beyond.

The economics programme will instill in the students the ability to deal with evolving issues and will inspire students to think out-of-the-box solutions. In keeping with the modifications in the discipline of economics, the programme will also cover a range of techniques from other fields of engineering and technology.
