Mystory@Jayeeta Banerjee: How I made the most of my college years
My college life has made me what I am right now. I am brave enough to travel anywhere alone, can handle any type of situation at any given moment. I was an introvert before I stepped out of my native place, West Bengal. I struggled as I knew primarily Bengali and barely understood English.
I was a nervous wreck when it came to staying in a hostel since I had never done so earlier. I was far away from my home and my family. Though I was afraid but I never showed my fear in front of my parents. I struggled a lot, both at hostel and at college as I didn't know Hindi. My classes were taken in Hindi mostly except English classes. It was challenging for me. Sometimes, I couldn't understand what my teachers said. I noted them down in Bengali and thereafter translated them into English.
I started taking help from books. At that time, there was no Internet, no laptops. It was 2006. But I had helpful roommates and seniors. They guided me when I asked for help. Gradually I overcame these problems.
I learned to enjoy my college life and my hostel life. At hostel, I got familiar with night outs, night parties. I came to know about hostel decoration. Hostel life also made me practical and realistic. I learned many lessons, some hard ones, when I started communicating with more people. I came to know that people are not so simple as I had earlier thought; they are far more complex. Some are good and some are not. This difference and variety is what makes up the world. I was in my own shell when I was at home. So I started judging people better, I grew better discretion.
Now, I realise that my decision of coming out of my little closed world was a wise one. I played basketball, learned dance, sang songs and all these activities started as challenges for me. I gradually overcame them and I knew I could. My willpower was strong. It was my lifestyle which helped in keeping a strong will power. I went on to complete my higher studies in Hyderabad. I know what I want to do in life. I think I have learnt many new things in life from all the different things that I have done in practicality.
