After completing 12th, one question that was always on my mind, was, “What after 12th?” I was extremely scared to choose my course as according to me the choice made at that moment impacts the entire career and life of the individual.

I wanted to secure a seat in a reputed college, and I got a call from Janki Devi College, but as luck would have it, another student who had secured just 0.5% more marks than me got selected. I was very annoyed, still I tried for other colleges. However, since the cut-off for commerce students was very high at all the colleges, all I got was disappointment. I also went to Hansraj College, but could not make to it.

Since I was not able to get into any of the colleges and course of my choice, I was not able to understand what I should do next. My family suggested me to go for Nursing, as it was not necessary to have a Science background to be able to opt for the subject. But, since I knew about the financial condition of my family, I refused to opt for the course.

At that moment I felt very irritated as I could not see any option for myself. However, I calmed down myself and finally I got admission in School of Open Learning, Delhi University. Even after all this, my dreams of attending a regular college could not get fulfilled. Along with my BCom, I also pursued 1year O level computer course from NIELIT, and worked with a C.A firm too. I am also a poem writer at Hindi Vibhag Magazines. Currently, I am pursuing a Librarian course from IGNOU.

Always give your best, and even then if you do not get the best opportunity, try and create an opportunity and a better future for yourself.

I felt bad when I was not selected in any regular college, but I made myself understand that it didn’t mean that I was a loser. If I had got a chance to attend classes in a regular college, I would have enjoyed a lot. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my classes at the Open College too. I met numerous friends with whom I could share my school achievements, discuss life outside college, and much more.

The teachers of the college always inspired us. I was very impressed with my English teacher and she always said, “Don’t ever give up, be it any circumstances as you know your own ability and your aims. Keep hard work and continue to work towards it till you achieve the results.”

My college experience has made me confident and now I am more determined and focused towards my studies and goal in life. I want to open my own school where education will be imparted to underprivileged children.
