Accenture is a global company in the real sense. Incorporated in Ireland, it is listed in the US and at present, has a French CEO. Accenture India offers management consultancy, technology and outsourcing services. About a third of the employee base in the company is from India, which is expected to cross the headcount of 80,000 next month. Known for large-scale campus hiring in the last few years, Accenture is looking forward to recruit 6,000 to 7,000 students this year too.

The new recruits will include several laterals who are experts in ERP, CRM, SCM, EAI (enterprise application integration), application maintenance, application development, IT infrastructure, KPO/BPO, telecom application, consulting, project management, delivery management, business analysis, programme management and practice management. Lateral hiring means hiring students with prior work experience in their field. Read more

India is not only important as the employee base for Accenture but has also become increasingly important as a market. Its outsourcing revenues, fuelled by India and the Asia-Pacific region, have increased by 16%. While wooing business from the corporate, Accenture has played a significant role in implementing the core biometric identification system for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), and is also working on a project to modernize IT systems for India Post.

Accenture’s global headcount is 2,51,000, out of which 40,000 employees are from the US and 35,000 are from the Philippines. Hence, it is believed to be immune from the backlash against offshoring in the US or Europe.

In the last five years, the number of Indian employees hired by the company has more than doubled. The company has its presence in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad and recently acquired additional office spaces in Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and the NCR. These spaces are believed to be in the range of 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh sft range. In general, a 2 lakh sq ft infrastructure can seat about 2,000 people.

This year, the recruitments at Infosys have increased by 12% while hiring at TCS is at its peak too. However, the latest trends indicate that IT professionals – from freshers to those with about five years of experience – are now gravitating to mid-tier companies that offer better opportunities to work on niche projects and a faster route to career growth. IT companies are big on campus recruitments. While Microsoft, GE, Infosys, and TCS have been the staple recruiters at big engineering and management colleges in India, Facebook surprised everyone by offering a package of Rs 70 lakh per annum to an IIT Kanpur student last year. See details

However, students should know that getting hired during campus recruitments may not necessarily mean that they can join the job as soon as they graduate. Onboarding delays are not unusual in IT companies. The students hired by Infosys during campus placements in August-September 2011 are still waiting to join their jobs. While some will start working from coming September, some may have to wait till July 2013 to be onboard the company. More about waitlisted campus hires at Infosys
