College affiliation

First and foremost, you need to check whether the college of your choice is recognized by the UGC or not. Any degree holds value in the job market only if the college is affiliated to a university recognized by the government and the course in recognised by the AICTE.

BCA syllabus and curriculum

The duration of BCA is three years. This information technology course is usually divided into six semesters over the three years, during which the students are imparted extensive knowledge of Information and Technology. While choosing a college, you much cross check its course curriculum with other colleges in order to ensure, that you pick a course that is up to date and at par with international standards. Also, it not only should cover the basics but should also offer specialisations so that you can find your calling and excel in it. Students can also opt for Integrated courses (BCA+MCA) if they plan to pursue Computer Application at post graduate level as well.

(a) If the faculty is flexible i.e. if the teachers are available to solve student’s queries before or after the class

(b) If teachers share extra study material with the students

(c) How often can you meet the teachers? Is it possible to have the lecturer’s assistance with test exercises and during exam preparation? And will your queries be solved in time or will you have to wait for the next class?

(d) How well read and experienced are the faculty members. Their knowledge of the subject will determine how much you learn.

College infrastructure

Another important factor that needs to be kept in mind while choosing a BCA college is its infrastructure. The infrastructure of the BCA college should be modern and well-equipped with latest technology. The building, the classrooms, the computer labs, the library, canteen, recreational hub, hostel, etc. should be on par.

Career options after BCA

BCA comprises four sections, namely: Soft Skills & Personality Development, Basic Mathematics & Logic building, Core Computing Technologies and Project Work (applying knowledge). BCA graduate can do pretty much all that a BE graduate can. In IT industry, BCA graduates are more sought after than a BE ones and since IT is a booming sector, there are a lot of opportunities to choose from. Ideally, the next step after BCA is opting for a Post Graduate degree like MCA and MBA, but those who want to start working, they can find several jobs in software.

Another important factor to be kept in mind is ‘placement’. You must check with every institute’s placement cell, its record of placement over the years, the companies and other details. If possible, try to talk to ex-students.
