Indian IT giant, Infosys will be establishing a Kochi-based Startup Village, which will act as a technology business incubator in order to enhance the levels of entrepreneurship in the country, reported the Times of India.

Infosys will host a meeting today for the country heads and chief executives of major IT and telecom companies like Microsoft, Google, Dell, HP, Vodafone and others to chart out a blueprint for the Startup Village to support 1,000 new telecom ventures in the coming 10 years. Infosys co-chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan is the chief mentor of the Startup Village.

Sanjay Vijayakumar, a management team member and chief executive of MobME Wireless Solutions told TOI that globally there are approximately 5,000 incubators, out of which 2,000 are US-based while 1,000 of them are in China.

"India has only 65 incubators, but we need at the least 1,000 in the country," Sony Joy, chief evangelist at the Startup Village and co-founder of MobME informed TOI. According to him, the country’s existing incubators are in collaboration with academic institutions and thus lack the required business acumen their counterparts in the US have.

Infosys plans to set up the not-for-profit Startup Village at Kinfra High Tech Park and will be promoting young entrepreneurs in the 18 to 25 age bracket. It will be India’s first business incubator to be established through private-public-partnership. (Read more)
