Global tech companies and internet firms are realizing that there is good enough talent pool outside the prestigious IITs, just waiting for an opportunity to showcase its skills and ingenuity. The realization is translating into attractive pay packets for talented non-IITians.

The highest salary figure at NIT Warangal this year is about Rs 60 lakh per annum, offered by Microsoft for a global posting. Three other students from the institute have bagged similar offers from Epic Systems that makes software for healthcare companies. Global industry giants like Google, Amazon and Pepsico offered salary packages in the range of Rs 8-20 lakh per annum. IBM hired 85 students from the institute. Gaming companies like EA Sports also selected four students and offered them a package of Rs 12 lakh per annum.

Google, Amazon, Deloitte, Adobe, Oracle, Flipkart, PepsiCo, DE Shaw, Direct-I, Future First, Caterpillar, and IBM – all have hired students from non-IIT campuses at Vellore, Madurai, and Mesra as well as from private engineering colleges at Delhi and Bangalore.

To lure talent, companies are not only offering higher salaries and better perks but also offering free holidays, joining bonuses of up to Rs 1 lakh and international assignments.

The increasing demand for IT professionals has led the recruiters to look beyond the IITs. Placement heads also believe that tier II and III colleges offer a good mix of students from different cultures and their students have high aptitude as well as high emotional quotient.

This year, campus recruitments will start from September and it is believed that engineering and tech firms, including Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant, TCS and HCL will be among the first wave of recruiters.
