Mid-tier IT cos offer better career prospects
In 2012, recruitments at Infosys have increased by 12% while hiring at TCS is at its peak too. Hence, it comes as a surprise when CNBC – TV 18 revealed that the number of applicants for top-tier IT firm like Infosys has shown a sharp decline of 30% since last year. The latest trend indicates that IT professionals – from freshers to those with about five years of experience – are now gravitating to mid-tier companies that offer better opportunities to work on niche projects and a faster route to career growth.
Smaller players like Mindtree and Hexaware are attracting talent by offering them quick recognition, an opportunity to learn and develop new skills and expertise on the job, higher retention bonus, variable pay, and even travel opportunities.
New technologies like e-commerce and mobile technology seem more challenging and exciting for the younger generation. Last year, Facebook had offered a starting package of 70 lakh rupees per annum to a student from IIT Kanpur. See details
Global recession has marred the sheen of benefits like stock options and exposure to global marks that had once been the highlight of the IT firms like TCS, Wipro and Infosys.
However, this does not mean that top-tier Indian firms are facing talent crisis. In fact, there are as many as 28,000 students hired at campus placements by Infosys in August-September 2011, however, they are still waiting to get onboard the company.
