IT sector saw women leading the recruitments this year This year women made their mark in the IT sector, overtaking men in campus recruitments. It is a sector where mass recruitment is a norm which makes it more significant over others.

IBM India recruited 52% women this year during the campus placementstill June. Last year the hiring was just 38%, while it was 32% in the previous year, reported The Economic Times. Though IBM does not reveal the numbers, but India’s top IT companies are reportedly hiring over 30,000 people and 70% of them through campus placement.

SAP Labs have hired 265 engineers from campuses out of which 42% are women; the ratio is considerably high from 34% last year and 31% in 2010. However in Cisco India, the figures have seen a dip to 22 per cent this year from 25 per cent last year.

As observed by IBM's recruitment leader for India, though the number of women students is just 18% of the total engineering admissions, but the high rate of women hires is an outcome of the joint efforts of IT companies and placement cells of colleges striving to achieve this mark. IBM also attributes the rise in its women employees to the awareness about IBM’s women friendly facilities such as flexible work policies, work from home option, etc.

SAP Labs pays special attention during its campus recruitments to the few women engineering colleges in the country such as the Cummins Engineering College in Pune and Meenakshi Engineering College in Chennai. It holds an online test on International Women's Day (March 8) for recruitment of women engineering students across colleges.  The test is aimed at computer science students with CGPA of around 8.

For last five years, Cisco has been organizing Girls in Technology programme in which 100 students are invited to its Bangalore campus where they are exposed to the company's labs, work environment and culture along with the company’s latest technology. Read more
