Data Scientists are the ones crafting magic in apps we use on a daily basis; Ola, Uber, Google, AirBNB, Alexa, Snapdeal, Flipkart, Amazon, Weather forecast, Facebook and many more. Data Science is one of the fastest growing, highest remunerating and most intellectually challenging field. Data Scientist has been named as the ‘sexiest job of the 21st century’ by Harvard Business Review.

Data is everywhere. In fact, the amount of digital data that exists is increasing at a rapid rate, almost doubling every year, altering the way we live and interact with the smart technology. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of talk about Data Science, Big Data, Machine Learning, Deep Learning etc. Today, every organisation is struggling to convert itself into a data driven organisation due to lack of accomplished professionals. This has resulted into an increased demand of data scientists in the world.

Before 2010, the amount of data was relatively small and data was analysed by business analysts, data analysts, statisticians etc.  However, the sheer volume of data available today needed better equipped data analysts called Data Scientists. Data Scientists are much more evolved as they deal with Big Data and create data products, automated data analysis tools, dynamic visualization etc. Today, startups and major players generate large amounts of data, thereby triggering the importance of data scientists.

With market competition strengthening, top organizations across the world are turning to data scientists to analyze and identify new market opportunities for their services and products. As things stand now, almost 80% of best organizations consider data science as a critical component of business. Data Scientists have a huge influence on company policies and marketing strategies. The global demand for Data Scientists has increased exponentially in the past decade and will only increase further. Annual demand for data scientists is predicted to reach 700,000 by 2020. The sheer demand and high pay packages make Data Science a lucrative career option.

There is a global demand for data scientists who have in depth knowledge and applied skills in various areas like math, stats, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), R, Python, SQL, SAS, Big Data tools like Hadoop and Spark, Visualization tools like Cogonos, Tableau, click view etc. The application of AI, ML, Deep learning, Data Science is growing in India and around the world in almost every industry like Telecom, IT, Insurance, manufacturing, healthcare, banking, retail, media, consulting, ecommerce, oil, gas, automobile, airline, government, NGOs, start-ups and every functional area.

On the pay packages front, Paytm hired a team of eight data scientists in Canada, paying an average of $250,000 (Rs 1.5 crore) each. Salaries for chief data scientists with over 10 years of experience in mathematics and statistics are regularly touching the Rs 1 crore mark; as mentioned in Economics Times. Unicorn Data Scientist are the upgraded version of our racy data scientists but are a little hard to hunt and are compensated more than $200,000 per year.

With the current state of the Indian engineering sector, we would advise taking up courses in Data Science, Big Data, Machine Learning to add more value and skills to your CV. Along with Aegis School of Data Science, IIT-K, ISI-K and IIM-K; IIIT Bangalore are some of the schools offering quality Data Science courses.
