Computer-aided design (CAD) is about using latest computer technology, software and tools for the process of designing real or virtual objects, as well as preparing design documentation. It is also known as computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), where software tools are used for drafting purposes too. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is again a broad term where software is used for engineering processes, such as analysis, planning, design, manufacturing or planning material requirements.
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is about using computers in operating a manufacturing plant efficiently and optimally. This may include planning, operating machinery, management, transportation and storage processes. The scope and curriculum of CAD, CAE, and CAM programmes are quite similar and overlap quite a lot.
Eligibility
3D, integrated, or parametric CAD, CAE, and CAM programmes as well as stand-alone programmes that offer specialization in one of the fields require excellent knowledge of computers as the primary criterion for admitting students.
However, most good institutes offering CAD, CAE, or CAM programmes require students to have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their subjects. They may accept science students who have computer science or IT background.
For CAE and CAM programmes especially, institutes may ask for a diploma or degree in engineering in a related discipline.
Career Prospects
Computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing skills are much in demand these days. They offer excellent job opportunities and good chances of career advancements. Manufacturing industries, R&D firms, government agencies, agriculture and food processors, and those who design products and systems for industries and service providers employ CAD designers.
Besides, CAD specialists can also find jobs with companies that deal in sales and marketing of new products. Some of the other fields where CAD, CAE, and CAM experts are needed are patent development, market development, loss management, reverse engineering and adaptive redesigning of products to suit different types of markets.
The salary packages offered to CAD designers may range from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 50,000. However, it may be much higher depending on the level of technical knowledge of an individual.
