IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE) 2011 Will Be Held On April 10!
IIT Joint Entrance Exam (IIT JEE) is a gateway to the undergraduate programmes of the premier engineering institutes in India that include all the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which are located in Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar and Roorkee; Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) situated in Varanasi; and Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad. Known for their world-class infrastructure, faculty strength, and alumni network, these institutions mainly offer Bachelors and Masters degree programmes in mainly engineering and technical disciplines.
Eligibility Criteria for IIT JEE
A candidate should not be more than 25 years of age on October 1 of the year of the year of examination. A relaxation of 5 years is allowed for SC, ST, and PD category students. Candidates should also have cleared their 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with at least 60% marks. SC, ST, and PD candidates need to secure 55% marks or more in the qualifying examination.
The eligibility criteria also say that the qualifying examination for IIT JEE is only valid for two years. Thus, for IIT JEE 2011, a candidate would have to clear their 10+2 exams in 2009 or after that.
Reservation of Seats in IITs
Seats are reserved at IITs, IT-BHU, and ISM Dhanbad for different categories according to the following formula:
Categories | % of seats reserved |
Scheduled Castes (SC) Scheduled Tribes (ST) Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) Persons with Physical Disability (PD) |
15% 7.5% 27% 3% |
If the institutes do not get enough eligible candidates to fill up reserved seats, then those seats are offered to General category students.
Exam Format of IIT JEE
IIT JEE consists of two papers. Each paper is of three-hours and has three sections each:
- Chemistry,
- Physics, and
- Mathematics
Both the papers have objective-type questions. An incorrect answer in IIT JEE carries a penalty of negative scoring.

Did You Know?
- An individual can only attempt IIT JEE twice in consecutive years.
- Those who have taken admission to any of the IITs, IT-BHU Varanasi or ISM Dhanbad, are NOT ELIGIBLE to write JEE 2011 again.
- If a candidate has attempted the qualifying examination more than once, the year of the first instance of the examination will be counted to determine the eligibility of the candidate to write the Joint Entrance Exams.
- If a candidate has appeared for 10+2 in 2011 and is still awaiting results, his admission to any of IITs will only be provision even if he clears IIT JEE. He will also have to submit original documents to the institute before September 30, 2011.
This means that effectively an individual can only attempt IIT JEE twice. It also means that if a candidate has already accepted admission in any of the engineering institutes once by registering and submitting fees, he or cannot appear for IIT JEE again.
