India needs over 50,000 ethical hackers by 2012!

Enterprises not serious on tackling cyber security threats... A Deloitte study says while cyber crime is rising, CIOs are not taking sufficient precautions to combat the situation. 58% of respondents said that they considered themselves well equipped to deal with threats. The report observes that spending large amounts of money did not necessarily guarantee security. Sometimes companies neglect to install simple measures which can prevent serious threats.

In 2009 physical theft or loss accounted for 37 percent of data breaches that could lead to identity theft.

Causes for the increase in cyber crime over the recent past include social networking, online transactions such as banking and retailing, rogue governments, terrorist outfits.


Using a risk based approach to handle such issues would be more prudent than using a security based approach, the study advises. This approach is based on the premise that anti social elements can hack into the system. This helps the organization tackle the most important threats. The report also says gathering intelligence through internal and external sources is important to keep track of the activities in the environment.
