Internship is the first step of a student in the corporate industry. The very first real experience a student goes through where the theoretical knowledge is put to application. It is here where the candidate starts to learn the work ethics and culture.

Media as we all know is not all about theoretical knowledge, the practical experience plays a pivotal role in shaping of a budding journalist. It is not only essential for the sake of a summer internship, the organisation trains the students and chisels them to perfection.

A student has a lot of options, he/she can opt for various media organisations. In India, a student can opt for newspapers, magazines, news/radio channels, advertising agencies, PR organizations etc. which depends upon the candidate's individual interest.

5 Steps to an internship:

  • Prepare:

Resume or CV (curriculum vitae) is a summary of an individual's academic records and achievements. It is a must for the candidate to keep them clean and remember to keep it simple. No fancy or script fonts, if possible get your cover letter checked by a proof reader. The cover letter must contain that you're looking for an internship and its details (like your availability, college credits for pursuing it).

  • Target:

Before you actually begin to search for an internship, it is extremely important to make a list of whereabouts you'd prefer. Keep in mind your interest and your future goal, as gaining experience in an organisation is priceless. It's a good idea to apply for at least 10 to 15 internships and watch out for the best.

  • Apply:

Resume is the way through which a person knows you. The sooner you start the better it will be. It is always best to have a lead time. E-mail them or upload your resume on their site (varies with organisations). In the end follow the instructions given by the employers.

  • Interview:

The first round for most organizations is a telephonic round or a face to face interview. For the interview, it is important to present yourself as a mature, serious student. Internships in this field are highly competitive so remember to dress according to the occasion.

  • Accept and be ready:

After you have been accepted by the organisation you can simply accept the internship by confirming it verbally. Say yes only if you really mean it. Interns have to work hard as they are mostly put on research projects. Don't shy away from it. That's the reason you are there for.
