Career as a food critic

Breaking the conventional boundaries of being a writer or a journalist, food fanatics can opt for a career as a food critic. For pursuing it as a career, the candidate needs to have a knack for foodalong with excellent writing skills. Food critics write about restaurants ranging from fast food establishments to high-end fine dine restaurants, cafes, and other food outlets.

 It is part of their work to explore restaurants, experience the hospitality, try the items on the food and beverage menu, and then publish thefindings. With everything going electronic, food critics have also adopted a different approach to reach their audience. Many of us have watched "Highway on my Plate" on NDTV Good times, where two foodies give their verdict on eating-out places across the country, where one reviews the vegetarian items, while the other comments on the non-vegetarian fare.

 A food critic judges the food/ restaurant based on various criteria including – taste, appeal, texture, ambience, service etc. In this profession, a candidate must be open to trying out a variety of food and must not hesitate in exploring any new cuisine. Ratings given by food critics help the readers or viewers to decide on the best eating out places to visit and helps them make a better choice.

Job Opportunities

Food critics are employed by food magazines, newspapers, review websites, city guidebooks, television channels and radio programs. In addition, one can also do freelancing work as food writers/ critics, and also write blogs.

 

Remuneration:

In the begining the salary ranges from anything between Rs 12,000 to Rs18,000. With experience and knowledge the salary increases and then sky is the limit for those who make a name for themselves in the profession.
