Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC): Oldest Mass Com Institute in India
Set up in 1965, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is India's oldest and one of the most prestigious mass communication institutes. What makes IIMC so special is the mix of a highly qualified faculty (all pioneers in their own fields), excellent infrastructure and a crop of deserving students screened through a national entrance test. Only two out of every 100 students who sit for the exam finally make it to the classroom! "The infrastructure and facilities at IIMC are great and at par with any private institute that charges almost twice the fees. A student has a reasonable amount of freedom to use the available equipments and learn on their own. Also now that one is in the real industry, one realizes that the brand of IIMC does matter if only for its recall value" says Aditi Uberoi, an ex-student.
Ranked as the numero uno institute of mass communication by various national magazines, papers and websites, the brand value of the institute has only probably increased with the appointment of Sunit Tandon, eminent theatre and television personality and CEO, Lok Sabha TV, as the new director of the institute.
"He has been a part of the industry for a long time now and is therefore well equipped with the experience and vision required to take the institute to higher levels of excellence. We as students are expecting great things", says Isha Pharka, a journalism student.
Famous for: Along with its regular one-year courses, the college also conducts a diploma course in development journalism for mid-career journalists from non-aligned and developing countries.
Short-term courses on radio jockeying and photography also attract students from all over the country throughout the year.
Programmes:
One-year postgraduate diploma courses in journalism (English, Hindi, radio & television, Oriya) and a one year PG diploma in advertising and public relations.
Extra-curricular activities: The campus is alive with cultural activities throughout the year. Along with the weeklong Hindi Pakhwada celebrations and the annual festival called ‘Roarr', the college also holds various film screenings and seminars inviting eminent personalities from the industry.
Infrastructure: One of the strongest points of IIMC is the infrastructure support available to the students. The campus is spread over an area of about 15 acres. The students get hands-on experience on all media as the college is well-equipped with fully functional facilities like a printing press, photography labs, editing labs, two radio studios and a production control room.
The college has two auditoriums: a mini auditorium and a state-of-the-art "MANCH" (auditorium) with a seating capacity of over 400.
The institute has the largest specialized library in mass communication in the country. It is stocked with over 26,000 volumes only on mass communication and its allied subjects. The library also stocks a wide array of books on other subjects, subscribes to over 100 periodicals and 40 daily newspapers.
The college also has a community radio service of its own - Apna Radio 96.9FM.
The well-planned and sprawling green campus is one of the major attractions in itself. "We love the campus; it's beautiful, green and serene. Its cut off from the hustle of the city and so the environment is ideal. Sipping a hot cup of chai on frosty winter mornings is bliss!" says Sukalp Sharma, a broadcast journalism student.
Over the 44 years of its existence IIMC has trained a number of media professionals both from within the country and abroad.
