Journalism can be defined as the collection and dissemination of news through print, electronic and online media. It involves various areas of work such as reporting, writing, editing, photographing, broadcasting or cable casting news items.

There are various opportunities including reporter, writer, editor, researcher, correspondent and anchor. Journalists specialise in various news beats such as politics, finance and economics, investigation, culture and sports for newspapers and periodicals.

Students can pursue the following programmes-

Undergraduate Programmes:

  • Bachelors in Journalism (BJ)
  • Diploma in Broadcast Journalism
  • Diploma in Journalism


Postgraduate Programmes:

  • PG Diploma in Broadcast Journalism
  • PG Diploma in Print Journalism
  • PG Diploma in TV Journalism
  • Masters in Journalism and Mass communication

Eligibility:

  • For Bachelor degree in journalism the candidate must have successfully completed 10+2
  • For Post graduate degree courses a Bachelor degree in journalism is preferred.
  • One year certificate courses in journalism for which eligibility is 10+2. There are also courses in specialised areas of journalism like sports, television, photo, press law etc.
  • Questioning attitude with strong will power, aptitude for presentation in an accurate, concise and effective manner
  • Differentiate facts from irrelevance
  • Accept criticism and willingness to work towards it

Job Prospects and Remuneration

Aspirants can find employment as editors, reporters, columnists, correspondents, staff or freelance writer, photojournalists, proofreaders, news analysts etc. in print (newspapers and magazines), electronic (Radio, Television) and Online media. Entry level salary can be anything from Rs 10000 - Rs 15000 and with experience one can get higher package.
