Masters of Business Administration or MBA is one of the most popular post-graduation programs in India and abroad. Getting into a top MBA college can be a little daunting as the process is stressful and time consuming.

Here are 8 steps that will guide you and ensure your admission to top MBA colleges.

8 Steps to ensure your admission to top MBA colleges

Step 1: Give your dream of getting into a top MBA college a kick-start NOW!

The first step always starts with the preparation. If you have taken the decision to pursue MBA and have an aim to get into a top MBA college, then you need to start now. Start preparing well for your admission. Collect all the data regarding the admissions in the top B-schools; deadline of registrations, application form submissions, exams, and other important dates.

Step 2: Excel in MBA entrance exams

Top MBA colleges and IIMs provide admissions based on the scores of the candidates in the various aptitude exams like CAT/XAT/CMAT/MAT/SNAP, etc. These are the management exams that any MBA aspirant must take if they wish to enter his/her dream college.  If you wish to go abroad for post-graduation in management, then you must attempt the General Management Aptitude Test (GMAT). These entrance exams are mandatory for MBA admission. Also, if you are planning to go abroad then you must appear for TOEFL and IELTS. These exams are widely accepted exams to certify your English fluency.

Step 3: Make a list of B-schools you wish to apply in

Make a list of the MBA colleges you want to apply in. Take some time out and do a thorough research about the colleges that you are applying in. Look at the ranks of the MBA colleges and make a decision accordingly. Check the admission process, courses, pedagogy, faculty, infrastructure and recognition of these colleges and take an informed decision accordingly. Some top MBA colleges accept scores of management exams other than CAT. This will help you choose the best MBA college and program which is at par with your career goal and interests.

Step 4: Work on your personal and professional skills

Top B-schools prefer candidates who are smart not only in academics but also active in extra-curricular activities. MBA is not a cake walk. It requires hard work in every field, whether it is academics, extra-curricular activities, quizzes, case studies or project works and assignments. A candidate must know how to work within a team and build it strong and at the same time should know how to be a good leader. These skills are important because an MBA degree will land you in jobs at the managerial level, and such jobs require strong leadership skills.

Step 5: Make your resume stand out

Enhance your profile throughout your journey of admission to the best MBA college because this is one of the most important things for your MBA application. Take on extra-curricular activities which will strengthen your leadership and team building skills which will in turn enhance your resume/CV. As mentioned above, many top B-schools prefer candidates who have such qualities. Take part in activities that you think will have a positive impact on your resume. Craft a professional resume that will showcase your strengths and has all the relevant information. Your resume is the reflection of your personality, therefore, make sure it is carefully crafted and at the same time highlights the important points.

Step 6: Get some good recommendations

Many B-schools prefer candidates with good recommendations. They ask for at least two recommendations who can affirm the qualities and skills that you have put in your resume. Hence, if you are working in some company then you can get recommendation letters from your managers or if you have volunteered in some non-profit organization or have been a part of any organization, you can get a recommendation from any of your seniors there. This will enhance your profile and therefore increase your chances of getting into the top MBA colleges.

Step 7:  Practice and Practice

It is wisely said, “Practice makes a man perfect”. When you decide to apply for an MBA program, the only thing that will get you in top MBA college is practice. When you are appearing for various management exams make sure you take a lot of mock tests before actually attempting the main exam. Also, prepare well for Personal Interviews and Group Discussions as they are an important part of the admission process. Evaluate yourself regularly.

Step 8: Ask the experienced and the experts

To understand the pros and cons of any MBA program, you need to talk to someone who has already been a part of that program. They will help you understand the exam patterns, admission process, etc. They will tell you what you should really expect from the program and what will it bring for you. This will also in a way help you build your network which will come in handy in the future.
