BMC-MU’s MBA in Disaster Management set to roll from next month
MBA in Disaster Management by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and backed by Mumbai University (MU) is reportedly all set to be launched next month, seven years after it was conceptualized.
The disaster management course was proposed in 2009 but was delayed as both the bodies took time in working out the structure and syllabus.
According to a report in DNA, the course is all set be finally launched this July.
At the time of conception, the course was proposed to be a postgraduate diploma (PGD) but was revised to MBA in January 2016 after it was felt that a PGD would undermine the value of the course.
The three-year course will be conducted at City Institute of Disaster Management (CIDM) — in Parel, Mumbai with the support of Garware Institute of Career Education and Development.
According to the report, around 40 students will be inducted in the course which consists of subjects like introduction to disasters, mitigation and planning, and coordination and communication, amongst others.
Students will also study 35 types of natural and man-made disasters outlined by the National Disaster Management Academy.
Talking about the program, joint municipal commissioner SS Shinde told the daily that the syllabus was being finalized by lecturers from various departments of Mumbai University and the disaster management cell of the BMC. The lecturers from the disaster management cell of the BMC will also be conducting lectures for the students.
"We will evaluate the success of this batch and then later open the course for graduates from all streams," he was quoted by DNA as saying.
The fee structure will be finalized in the meeting between BMC and MU, to be held next week.
BMC’s MBA in disaster management is the first ever course, run by the civic body to be affiliated to the MU.
