CAT 2014: Understand the short-listing criteria of all IIMs
Clearing CAT 2014 is the just the first step towards achieving a management education. It does not guarantee a call from the best B-schools in the country.
For that to happen, MBA aspirants must fulfil the institute specific requirements, such as academic scores, work experience and so on. Candidates even receive points for academic diversity and gender diversity.
For the last two years, we have been presenting the shortlisting criteria of all the IIMs. This year is going to be no different.
Below, we have compiled the shortlisting criteria of all the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for the academic session 2015-17.
(The B-Schools have been listed in no particular order or preference).
No significant changes have been incorporated, except introduction of 'Transgender' in category section. Candidates will be selected via a two-step process:
1. Preliminary Screening
Candidates fulfilling minimum cut-offs in CAT 2014 percentile ranks (90 percentile and above for general category) and Application Rating (AR) scores and obtaining a positive (more than zero) raw score in both Verbal and Quant Sections will be shortlisted for stage one.
2. Academic Writing Test (AWT) & Personal Interview (PI)
Top 50 candidates or top 1% of the number of applicants to IIM Ahmedabad, from each of the five categories of academic disciplines, will be shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of their CAT percentiles. From the remaining pool of candidates (meeting minimum cut offs and AR scores), a merit list will be drawn on the basis of CAT percentile.
3. Final selection
Final selection of candidates will be based on Composite Scores (CS). The CS will be computed using the following method:
- First, CAT, AWT & PI scores will be normalised by dividing it with the corresponding maximum possible score that could be obtained.
- The CS of a candidate is then obtained as:
CS = 0.50 (Normalized PI Score) + 0.10 (Normalized AWT Score) + 0.40 (Normalized CAT Total Score).
IIM-B will adopt a two-phase selection process based on past academic performance, CAT score, performance in personal interview and prior work experience.
1. First, candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of CAT 2014 scores for WAT and PI. Thereafter, candidates will be further shortlisted on the basis of Class 10 and 12 scores, graduation scores and work-experience or professional course.
Pre-PI score for Work Experience will be calculated as:
= 5x/36 if 0
= 5 if x >= 36
where x is the months of work experience up to September 2014.
Weights for remaining four components are fixed as:
CAT =20, 10th board=15, 12th board=10, Bachelors= 15.
2. In stage 2, qualified candidates will have to appear for personal interview and essay. During the PI candidates have to write a short note (one page) on a topic provided by the institute.
3. The final shortlist will be arrived on the basis of scores in written test and PI, along with pre-PI selection parameters (academic performance, work experience).
In the first stage, candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of CAT 2014 score, past academic performance and other factors. The minimum cut off percentile for short-listing candidates (general category) for Personal Interview (PI) round stage is 90 or above.
