College Review: Faculty of Management Studies (FMS)
With an experience of about 60 years in the continuously evolving field of management education, the institution has closely seen all that has taken place in the area of business, entrepreneurship, economic policies and industrial relations.
Infrastructure
Students of this prestigious institute say that it lacks modern technology and facilities. But if insiders are to be believed this is soon going to change as the institute plans to shift to a bigger, more equipped building soon.
FMS also has access to the world class DU centralised data system, which is a repository of multi-sectoral and diverse subjects not limited to only management. This B-school has a well-equipped seminar hall; centrally air-conditioned, wifi and projector enabled classrooms along with recreation facilities that include cricket, table tennis, volleyball, basketball and carrom board playing arenas.
The library has a comprehensive collection of management books along with some 20,000 odd journals and research papers. Students can even access magazine subscriptions such as that of Harvard Business Review and the likes.
Faculty
FMS is an extremely popular management institute due to its faculty. Professors at FMS have teaching experience ranging from 2-35 years in their respective fields. The teaching methodology is mostly case based and fosters parallel thinking from the manager's perspective for all the MBA students. Faculty at FMS is very approachable, open to feedback and puts in extra efforts to solve student queries.
One professor whose class no student wants to miss is Harsh V Verma, who is an associate professor at FMS and teaches Marketing Strategies. Students fondly talk of his quirky sense of humour and how he quickly and easily explains the most difficult of concepts by means of his knowledge and unique way of delivering lectures. Apart from this, students even applaud his dressing sense.
Guest lectures are also conducted on a regular basis so that students can easily relate the theory they are taught in classes with the working of the corporate world.
Teaching Techniques
Classes at FMS are interactive in nature and are a healthy mix of formal lectures, case studies and presentations. An equal weightage of 50% is given to both internal and external exams. Tests are conducted on a regular basis which can be both, planned as well as surprise in nature. Although surprise tests are not very common but students try and stay as up-to-date as possible in subjects such as Finance and Economics where you won't know when your knowledge is put to test.
Students are not given any handouts as such but most of the teachers share their presentations with them.
Placements
A total of 93 companies came for recruitment in 2013, some of which are TAS, HUL, Nestle, Coca Cola, Accenture Management Consulting, BCG, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Citibank.
All the 211, students who sat for placements in 2013 were offered packages above Rs 4 lakhs.
- Median package offered: Rs 16 lakh per annum
Attendance
Rules are stringent regarding attendance and students need to comply with the same and have to maintain at least 75% attendance. A window of 10 minutes late arrival is acceptable for a lecture after which entry is not granted to students.
College Crowd & Hangout Places
You will find students from every nook and corner of India at FMS. Among a batch, around 80% of the students are from an engineering background and majority of them have prior work experience, however, there are many freshers as well.
There is a very healthy atmosphere at campus and seniors conduct workshops and 'Gyaan Sessions' to introduce and educate their juniors about the college and management industry as a whole.
Another thing which sets FMS apart from other B-schools is that it has a strong network of more than 10,000 alumni who are always ready to give information and mentor students regarding their career, industry basics or any other aspect they wish to discuss.
Although FMS doesn’t have any awesome hangout place to brag about, it falls in the heart of Delhi University and so the famous hangout places are CP and KNags, a name given to Kamla Nagar by one of FMS’s forefathers.
Canteen
Unlike other college canteens, FMS has a cozy canteen which offers mouth-watering delicacies to one and all. A lot of cuisines are offered and the food is subsidized as well. But if you visit FMS, one recommended dish is Sambar Dosa.
College Fest
The annual fest at FMS is called 'Fiesta' and is usually conducted in the third or fourth week of January. Students from the top 45-50 B-schools participate in the fest every year. Another event conducted by FMS is THE Leadership Summit, this fiesta brings with it the Annual Conclave (held in September) and Annual Convention (held in January & February).

Verdict
Overall, FMS helps students build an invaluable network and an opportunity to take part in corporate interaction, inter-college events and live projects. What sets FMS above other B-schools is its faculty and that is the reason why it is the place to be if you want to excel in the management field. However, an aspect where FMS needs to work on is providing more exchange programmes with students in foreign countries.
