By: Swarna Pavithra M
Managing time, solving sample question papers and practising regularly always help in cracking the exam with high scores.
The sole motive of conducting the MAT exam is filtering the capable students to fill the seats of the prestigious institutions in India for business management degrees like MBA and PGDM.
The candidates preparing for this exam should focus on directing their efforts in the right direction to crack this exam and get the desired results.
As aspiring management students, one is ought to be a critical thinker, who look into the facts to devise their opinion. They should be abreast with the topics such as Science, Environment, Geography, History, Politics, and Current Affairs.
The following are the topics to focus on:
- Language Skills and Comprehension
- Data Analysis and Sufficiency
- Mathematical Skills
- Current Affairs
- Critical Reasoning
1. Language Comprehension
Improving vocabulary and language comprehension would not happen overnight. To improve vocabulary, read magazines, newspapers, articles and watch English channels regularly.
Out of the total questions in language part, 25% of the questions are on vocabulary consisting of synonyms, antonyms, fill in the blanks, and jumbled words.
The remaining 75% questions are based on comprehensions like comprehension passages, jumbles paragraphs and grammatical questions.
2. Data Analysis and Sufficiency
Data Analysis consists of different patterns of questions like Piechart, Bar Chart, Line Graphs, Tables and Numerical Questions.
This is one of the easiest sections of the MAT exam to score marks, however, the candidate should also be careful while reading and understanding the questions.
3. Mathematical Skills
To solve these questions, it is important to understand the basic concepts completely. Also, I would suggest, implementing them in daily life situations and thinking logically would help in solving these kinds of questions with ease.
4. Current Affairs
Similar to language comprehension, overall knowledge of national and global affairs is needed to score marks in this section, which is impossible to acquire in a day. Forget not to keep a daily tab on current affairs via newspapers or at least through news channels.
Focussing more on business news, politics, government policies, and sports would be helpful.
5. Critical Reasoning
Critical reasoning might seem tricky, however, with regular practise one could ace this section. Applying mathematical shortcuts and a sound knowledge of directions and time and distance would help to solve the problems easily.
- The candidate would get one mark for each correct answer, whereas for each wrong answer there is a deduction of 0.25 marks.
Taking notes may be time-consuming, however, this is the most effective way to ace in an exam. Therefore, the candidates should make shorts notes while preparing a topic. Keep a journal of headings, subheadings and important points would help in quickly revising the concepts already covered.
