The Group of Eight (Go8) is a coalition of leading Australian universities dealing in general and professional education and are known for the research facilities available. Go8 universities have the pedigree of every Nobel Prize winners from Australia; they all were educated at a Go8 university. They are the most research oriented of all Australian universities and they also account for more than two thirds of Australian university research activity, research output and research training. It was established informally as a network of vice-chancellors in 1994 and was formally incorporated in 1999.

Here are the eight colleges of this group –

Australian National University

The Australian National University (ANU) is a public university located in Canberra. ANU is ranked first nationally and 27th in the world by the 2013 QS World University Rankings; second nationally and 48th in the world by the 2013 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

ANU has seven colleges, namely, The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, and other colleges catering to Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Law, Medicine Biology & Environment, and Physical & Mathematical Sciences.

 

Monash University

Monash University is a public university in Melbourne and was founded in 1958. Monash has approximately 45,000 undergraduate and 17,000 graduate enrolled students, making it the university with the largest student body in Australia. The University has been prominent in medical research.

Monash University has five campuses in Australia, one in Italy, South Africa and Malaysia each, and a research centre in India. Monash is divided into 10 faculties, namely, Faculty of Art & Design, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Faculty of Science.

 

The University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide is a public university in Adelaide and was established in 1874. The university has five campuses- North Terrace, Roseworthy, The Waite Institute, Thebarton and the National Wine Centre.

The University is divided into five faculties, namely, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of the Professions, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and Computer & Mathematical Sciences.

 

The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is a public university located in Melbourne, Victoria and was founded in 1853. It is Australia's second oldest university. Times Higher Education ranks Melbourne as 34th in the world, while the QS World University Rankings place Melbourne 31st in the world.

Melbourne University has 12 residential colleges in total, namely, Trinity College, Ormond College, Janet Clarke Hall, St Mary's College, Medley Hall, Newman College, Queen's College, Whitley College, Ridley College, University College, International House, Graduate House, and St Hilda's College.

 

The University of New South Wales

The University of New South Wales is an Australian public university which was established in 1949. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012–2013 placed UNSW 85th in the world and 5th in Australia.

The University has nine faculties, namely, Arts and Social Sciences, UNSW Canberra at ADFA, Australian School of Business, Built Environment, College of Fine Arts, Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Science.

 

The University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is a public university located in the state of Queensland and was founded in 1909.  The main campus is located in St Lucia, with other major campuses in Gatton, Ipswich and Herston.

The University of Queensland has 11 residential colleges, namely, Cromwell College, Duchesne College, Emmanuel College, Gatton Halls of Residence, Grace College, International House, King's College, St John's College, St Leo's College, Union College, and a Women's College

 

The University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is an Australian public university in Sydney and was founded in 1850. It is regarded as one of its most prestigious, and is ranked as the 27th most reputable university in the world by QS in 2013.

In 2011 it had 32,393 undergraduate and 16,627 graduate students. The University comprises of 16 faculties and schools, through which it offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The main campus has been ranked in the top 10 of the world's most beautiful universities by the British Daily Telegraph, The Huffington Post.

 

The University of Western Australia

One of Australia's best and most prestigious universities, UWA is highly ranked internationally in various publications. Students entering the University at an undergraduate level must choose a three-year bachelor's degree. The university offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), Bachelor of Design (BDes) and Bachelor of Science (BSci) .The University also offers the Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) course for students with extremely high academic results. This is a research degree which takes four years instead of the usual three for the other Bachelor degrees.
