MBA Finance vs MBA Marketing
By Aru Chopra
What’s the right choice? Can finance graduates get a better growth chart? Or is marketing a more lucrative option since every company is shouting out aloud about its products? Here’s what the experts have to say.
A chief advisor at Shiksha Café Dr Sudhiranjan Dey says, “Marketing graduates surely have larger prospects in the market. Also, faster and greater growth opportunities can be seen here over a career in finance due to the natural reason that marketing brings the money for finance to manage.”
For Arun Dev, another Shiksha advisor, it is a difficult task to compare the two as each offers a promising career. The big debate is not which one is better; rather it should be – what is the aptitude of the candidate? People who have an eye for detail and are numerically-oriented can go for MBA Finance, while those who have excellent communication skills and have an outgoing personality are suited to a career in Marketing.
A quick look at some important aspects of both these careers:
Finance | Marketing | |
Essential Traits | Quantitative skills, Financial skills, Understanding of accounting and financial management principles, Analytical skills | Strategic thinking, Tolerance for ambiguity, Flexibility, Creativity, Research skills, Presentable and Passionate. |
Opportunities | Banks, Financial Consultancies, Investment Banking, Institutional Finance, Merchant Banking, Corporate Finance | This being an integral part of any organisation, opens job avenues across industries right from education to media to F&B industry. |
Job Titles | Credit Risk Management Analyst, Financial Research Analyst, Personal Financial Advisor, Portfolio Manager, Budget Analyst, Administrators, Accountants and Chief Financial Officer | Marketing Manager, Branding Specialist, Advertising Executive, Public Relations Specialist, New Product Manager and Marketing Analyst |
Salary | Earnings vary according to the industry segment one is working in. However, broad pay packages are Rs 25,000-Rs 50,000 per month (entry level) and Rs 60,000-Rs 1.2 Lakh per month (middle level). At senior level, sky is the limit. |
Conclusion: Both open up lucrative prospects, hence you should pick the field that appeals to you, defining the role you wish to play in future and ensuring that you have the talent and skills to match your choice. It is all about passion, hard work and conviction.
