The group discussion (GD) is like a meeting in a corporate boardroom, and you should behave as if you are taking part in a real one. And if you don’t get to speak at all in the GD, start supporting the participant who seems like a leader. B-school aspirants got such tips on preparing for the group discussion and personal interview (PI), at two workshops organised by HT Horizons last week. The biggest draw of these sessions is that they are free of charge. Any MBA aspirant can attend these to know the best ways to get through the last leg of the b-school admission process. The sessions at Maharaja Agrasen College and Motilal Nehru College were steered by expert Amit Agnihotri, an Management Development Institute alumnus and a visiting faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad.“The GD is a simulation of a corporate conference. You have to behave as if a live discussion is going on in a boardroom,” said Agnihotri. Sometimes students are given real life case studies as topics in GDs. “The topic can be anything under the sun like ‘Should Bharti take over Zain Telecom’ or they can ask you to discuss this year’s budget,” he added. At MLN College, students participated in a mock GD on ‘Will Internet and mobile phones take over the old media like newspapers and radio?’
