Mystory@Amul S Tamboli: How I chose my course and career path – Challenges and learnings
I am Amul Tamboli, a small town guy, with no advanced knowledge of English language due to rural educational surroundings but I always had a great thirst to learn and speak languages since school days. I completed my 12th in Electronics but didn't opt for BE as I wanted to choose a different career line from others.
I had 83% so could easily get admission in the top Commerce college in Pune. I faced a lot of problems there being a student from rural background. The language used in our college was English so slowly it helped me to develop my soft skills. I chose MBA after graduation in Marketing and kept practicing English language till my MBA final year in 2005. During my crucial 5 years at Wadia Campus, I learnt one thing that soft skills matter a lot and you do not have an option, you have to be good in English. So I took help from my family, teachers and always strived towards perfection.

I always kept an attitude to learn new things and tried not be short-tempered. This unique way of learning helped me survive and grow at my initial marketing job at one private company.
I learnt various managerial skills in my jobs with top private banks during 2006 to 2010. I entered academics in 2010 and continue to do hard work, learn and help tribal and rural students of our area. It does not matter whom I am teaching as far as he is ready to learn soft skills first and in the way I am teaching. I have earned a lot of respect from people who have actually benefitted from my attitude towards soft skills and English speaking. So, I urge all youngsters to focus on these two qualities first. I am ready to help anyone who needs me. So, keep learning and stay focused to achieve your dreams is my advice to you all.
How I made my career
I started my career in 2000 and I could not decide whether I was on the right or wrong career path. What I knew was only one thing that I have to improve my skills and this will help me in the long run for sure. This attitude worked like a foundation stone in my entire career that boosted my confidence to face any situation and think positive in any condition. So, I am quite sure that what I am today is the right career for me.
A man learns from his mistakes and this is very true in my case also. I also committed many mistakes initially but I corrected them and moved on. I could have tried to learn 2-3 foreign languages during my graduation and post-graduation time is what I miss today.
When I look back, I don’t really regret anything because I have gathered so much knowledge since that time. I am never short of knowledge because I never give importance to marks alone. My advice to youngsters is quite simple – focus on soft skills and build your confidence to a high level, keep a track on the changing technologies and have a grip on the current marketing trends to understand your curriculum in a better way. Don’t run behind marks and grades, they may give you an entry in to the organisation but it’s only your interpersonal skills that will decide how successful you could be in your career. Listen to experienced people, ask questions and clarify your doubts at that time only. Don’t have any kind of negative emotions for anyone. You can make any career option good for you if you believe in only one thing, that is, you and your abilities.
