Mystory@Kiran Rai: How I chose my course and career path – Challenges and learnings

I belong to a middle class family. When I was in Class 12, I dreamt of getting a good job so that I could fulfill my parents’ needs and dreams. I chose Biology stream and completed my Class 12. At that time I did not have money for paying tuition fees. Then I joined college and completed my graduation in Biology stream with first rank. After I completed my BSc, I got selected for MSc in Chemical Science. There were only 20 seats and I was selected. I was very happy because my dreams were coming true. The college administration called me for counselling and fees submission. I requested my father for the fee. The fee amount was Rs 8,500 only but at that time my father was not able to arrange the required amount.

He requested a lot of people to lend him money but no one helped. I missed the opportunity. I got depressed and left my studies. But my brother came to me and advised me not to lose hope and always keep on trying. So I tried again and gave MBA entrance exam. I scored good mark and chose VNS College. But unfortunately during our MBA, recession hit and no company came for campus placement. When I was in the third semester, I joined a manpower consultancy company and my salary was Rs 3,500 per month. I was happy that at least I had a job. Then I got a job as an admin HR in an institute where they were willing to pay me Rs 10,000 per month and I joined there.

Yes, now I am doing a job in a good company as Regional Admin HR, which I wanted to do. Now I am able to give money to my parents, they are also happy. From my journey I have learnt that firstly your mind should be set on your career. You should start planning your career from Class 10 or Class 12. The stream you choose should be dependent on your career goal. I also made a mistake, I selected Chemistry field but due to lack of money I was not able to pursue the field. In this journey, I have seen a lot of ups and downs as well as good and bad working environment.
