Before diving into the preparation of group discussion you must know the difference between a group discussion and a debate. Most of the people sitting in group discussion will start a debate on the giving topic which is definitely a big no.

Group Discussion is an important activity in business and administrative spheres. In most of the sectors, if you are trying to get a job then prior to the interview, you have to go through a group discussion. The observer sitting there judges you on how systematic and purposeful interaction you could do in a group.

Before diving into the preparation of group discussion you must know the difference between a group discussion and a debate. Most of the people sitting in group discussion will start a debate on the giving topic which is definitely a big no. Debates are competitive in nature whereas group discussions are co-operative in nature; always remember this point in your mind.

The objective of a selection in a group discussion is mainly to check your team playing skills. You have to understand the other person’s point of view while making your point and ensure that your team reaches a solution that is accepted by all the team members.

Some key points while preparing for a group discussion are:

  • It is always good to have a general knowledge about the current affairs because most of the time group discussion’s topic is knowledge- Having some knowledge about the topic will give you a head start and you can initiate the group discussion. By doing this you not only hold an opportunity to speak but also get everybody’s attention.
  • Always be courteous and appeal humble. It’s important to address other participants and using salutations like Ms., Mr.
  • Using quotes, definition, facts, figures and statistics is always good.
  • Try to give proper direction to group discussion by giving logical points.
  • Make sure that your body language is positive and you look confident and welcoming.
  • It is advised not to be defensive or attacking during making your points.
  • You should always be clear and audible to everyone otherwise you will be neglected.
  • If by any chance you were not able to start the group discussion then you could still get the extra points for ending it by compiling the whole group discussion and giving a conclusion.
  • Always be curious to understand what other participants are thinking and what they are trying to convey. This will show that you are always open to learn and it is considered as a good attribute.
