India as a country made headlines all over the world for the 2014 General Elections which took place in nine phases. Also, as per information shared the 2014 elections earned a spot for themselves in India political history as there is no official leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha. Such a situation arose earlier when Jawahar Lal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi were elected as Prime Ministers.

Apart from this, India as a nation made strong statements before other countries of the world when the newly appointed Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi visited nations such as USA, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Nepal, Fiji, Bhutan and Mayanmar within few months of becoming the PM of the country.

General Elections 2014

The General Elections were held in India from April 7, 2014 to May 12, 2014. A total of 8,251 candidates contested for the 543 Lok Sabha seats, this year. The average election turnout over all the election phases was (around) 66.38%.

Statistics shared reveal that as many as 54 crore people voted in the General Elections of 2014. The results for the elections were declared on May 16, 2014, wherein it was shared that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 336 Lok Sabha seats. Out of this number, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is known to have won 282 seats.

On the other hand the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) won 58 seats. Out of this number, the Congress won 44 seats.

After this historic win Narendra Modi was chosen as the 15th Prime Minister of India. His swearing-in ceremony was held on May 26, 2014. PM Modi’s swearing-in also created history by being the only such ceremony which was attended by heads of all SAARC nations.

Andhra Pradesh Divided

The state of Andhra Pradesh (AP) was split into two on June 2, 2014 as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014. The two states that were formed on splitting AP are Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad will be the joint capital for these states for the next 10 years. K Chandrasekar Rao was made the Chief Minister of the state of Telangana.

Due to the splitting of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India now has 29 states and seven union territories.

Gopinath Munde Dead

The Union Rural Development Minister of India, Gopinath Munde died in a car crash on June 3, 2014. Munde lost his life to a car accident when he was headed towards the Delhi Airport at 6:20 am on the fateful day.

The accident occurred at the Prithviraj Road and Aurobindo Chowk cross-section, in the city of New Delhi, when a speeding Indica (car) hit the minister’s SX4 in the wee hours of the morning.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Launched

The Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on October 2, 2014 at Rajghat in New Delhi. As part of this national level campaign the Government has identified 4041 statutory towns wherein citizens would be encouraged to clean and thereafter maintain the cleanliness of the street, roads and infrastructure of the country.

As part of this initiative PM of India, Narendra Modi nominated nine people to take part in this campaign. Following which those nine people would nominate another nine people to take the baton forward. The first nine nominees were:

Chief Guest for Republic Day 2015

As per information shared, Barack Obama will be the Chief Guest for India’s Republic Day parade to be held in 2015. This information was shared by PM Narendra Modi on his twitter page stating that “This Republic Day, we hope to have a friend over…invited President Obama to be the 1st US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest”.

The same was confirmed by the US National Security Council twitter account which states that “@ invite of @narendramodi, President Obama will travel to #India in Jan 2015 to participate in Indian Republic Day celebration as Chief Guest”.
