New member in Eurozone

Latvia became the 18th member state to officially adopt Euro as its currency. The introduction of Euro cash in the economy of Latvia became an even bigger news point because this adoption of the currency was done on the 15th anniversary of the launch of the currency.

Victor Yanukovych removed from office

Ukrainian MPs voted on February 22, 2014 to remove its President, Victor Yanukovych from office and replaced him with Oleksandr Turchynov. The events that lead up to the ouster of Yanukovych revolve around him rejecting an EU association agreement wherein he choose to pursue a Russian loan bailout and thereafter encouraged closer ties with Russia. This led to violent clashes and civil unrest in which around 100 people lost their lives.

To control the situation Ukrainian Parliament announced voting to remove him from post citing that “he was unable to fulfill his duties”. On May 25 right elections were conducted to select his replacement, meanwhile after two days of this election arrest warrants were issued in Yanukovych’s name and reason cited for this was – his role in mass killing.

Russia suspended from G8

On March 24, 2014, Leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) held an emergency meeting and temporarily suspended Russia from the group on account of tension in Ukraine and the country’s incursion into Crimea.

Girls kidnapped in Nigeria

Reports came in that around 276 girls and women were abducted from a state school in the town of Chibok in Nigeria. News even came trickling that the kidnapped girls were being held hostage by Boko Haram terrorist network. Although the extremist group did not claim responsibility for these abductions but girls who escaped from captors shared that the group was behind these kidnappings. They also revealed that the group is doing this to send out a message that western education is sinful and girls shouldn’t attend schools.  

In another event terrorists detonated two bombs near the railway terminal of Jos in Nigeria on May 20, 2014. The twin bombings resulted in the killing of 118 people.

ISIS militant group emerges

In June a Sunni militant group emerged which called itself the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Later they renamed themselves as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The commander of this jihadist group is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The group began its offensive through North Iraq with an aim to capture Baghdad and thereafter overthrow the government which was led by Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

Operation Protective Edge launched by Israel

In July and August 2014, there was widespread animosity and tension between Hamas and Israel. The inciting factor for this was the kidnapping as well as murder of three teenagers from Israel. This was followed by a revenge killing of a teenager in Palestine.

After this Israel launched Operation Protective Edge on the Palestinian Gaza Strip wherein they made numerous missile strikes and followed this with a ground invasion. This operation lasted for seven weeks and during this course 71 Israelis and another 2,100 Palestinians were killed.
