18 medical students acquitted years after booked in ragging case
A magistrate court in Mumbai has acquitted 18 medical students, eleven years after they were booked for ragging their juniors in KEM Hospital's medical college.
During the trial, two of the 10 juniors who had been deposed earlier turned hostile in the court which proved to be crucial in the court's judgement. They flatly refused any kind of ragging or obscene act.
The alleged incident was of the year 2010 when as per the complainant, the ragging had taken place on the first floor of the hostel building. When the college was informed about the incident, the deputy dean of the KEM Hospital who was in charge of the administrative duties registered a case against the 18 senior students on October 20, 2012.
The junior reported to the police that during the unnatural ragging some of the students were asked to enact as if they had constipation and others were asked to perform women's innerwear advertisements. Some other students were forced to pose in obscene ways as shown in women's magazines by placing paper balls under their shirts. The juniors also said that they were threatened that if they did not obey the orders of the seniors, they will face dire consequences in academic pursuit.
However, the court pointed out that the investigating officer had not recovered anything from the room on the first floor like paper balls, women's undergarments or obscene photographs.
