The word anesthesia (also known as anaesthesia) has come from two Greek words “a” meaning “without” and “esthesis” meaning “sensation”. The name of the drug which causes anesthesia is called anesthetic and the one who carries out anesthesia is called the anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist is a medical specialist and is also a physician. The career involves helping the patients go through different medical procedures smoothly without any major obstructions occurring during the surgical process by keeping them in a controlled unconscious state. Anesthesiologist: most of them have completed their undergraduate college degree which is of four years of medical school. These people are also physicians. Anesthesiologist Assistant: They are professional, people who work under the instructions of an Anesthesiologist to carry out effective anesthesia care plans. The duties of an Anesthesiologist Assistant differ according to the needs of local practice. They always perform under the directions and medical instructions of an extremely qualified and experienced Anesthesiologist. The scope as an Anesthesiologist Assistant should be considered prospering due to the increased medical procedures taking place. In the process of assisting the anesthesiologists, they get to learn a lot and even become experienced themselves. Not only does it boost one’s career but it also helps them to gain personal knowledge and help them taking critical anesthesia care plans decisions in the future. Job opportunities are anticipated to grow in this area as the population is increasing and health care delivery is also increasing with it, including the number of surgeries and medical procedures. 

Certified Anesthesia Technician: The certified Anesthesia Technician who has completed the examination required as health care technicians. They are a part of the team which consists of the anesthesiologist and Anesthesiologist assistant. They perform their duties under the instructions of the licensed anesthesia care providers. 

The scope for this career is done properly and given the specified examinations is great, because of the increased amount of surgeries taking place in the medical world. There is an increased demand for certified anesthesia technician as they work under licensed Anesthesia care providers so the patients can go through the procedure without any worry and agony. 

Certified Anesthesia Technologist: A certified Anesthesia technologist has completed both the Certified Anesthesia technician and certified anesthesia technologist examinations per the requirements. They have additional levels of training and experience which will help them with their careers. These additional levels of training give them a better understanding of the career and a better understanding of the patients’ medical requirements and their issues. The people in this career can deal with medical issues more efficiently.

Skills required to succeed 

You should acquire a medical or osteopathy degree (M.D. or D.O.) 

A master's degree is required to learn Anesthesia in general. One needs to start by taking up the program in Anesthesiologist and Assisting which usually takes 2 to 2.3 years. The curriculum consists of lectures in the classroom and different courses in the lab; simultaneously an internship needs to be undergone as well. Most programs primarily focus on the medical syllabus. 

The average fees for studying Anesthesia in India ranges from 5000 to  25 lacs.
