Leh to get its first government medical college soon

Here’s a piece of good news for the prospective medical students! The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced to establish a Government Medical College (GMC) for Leh. This would be the first such facility in the hilly district and will help develop health education and services in the region.
The Health and Medical Education Department will set up the GMC in Leh under Phase-III, for which 25.125 acres of land at Shey Sindhu Ghat village has been allocated. The department has prepared detailed project report (DPR) and technical report for construction of the GMC according to the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the opening of 75 new government medical colleges across the country at the district level. This DPR would be submitted to the Ministry within two-three days.
According to an official spokesperson, “The establishment of this new medical college at Leh will go a long way not only in the health care sector but also for strengthening the engine of development in the region. A total amount of Rs 325 crore would be sanctioned by the Centre for the establishment of the GMC of which Rs 115 Crore has been earmarked for residence for students and hostel and Rs 80 crore for faculty, Rs 70 crore have been allocated for medical equipment and Rs 60 crore for upgradation of the teaching hospital.”
“The 300-bed SNM Hospital at Leh would be upgraded to a 500-bed facility, according to the requirements of the MCI and a new emergency block, diagnostic block and OPD block would be constructed within the hospital premises. The DPR for this is being prepared,” he added.
The government has already submitted DPRs for setting up new medical colleges at Udhampur and Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir.
