M.Sc in Virology: A Degree Offering Immense Opportunities in Research & Development of Vaccines
There has been witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of viral diseases, which has given a tremendous boost to the need for skilled researchers for developing vaccines to treat the same.
In 2009, the global outbreak of Swine flu suddenly became a cause of serious concern & the top priority of almost every nation in its grip. This prompted the light to be thrown on the role of a virologist.
Also, the considerable increase in the rising cases of viral diseases over the last decade has set the stage for rigorous research and development of vaccines. To encourage more students for joining this field, many reputed institutions have stepped forward to offer varied courses in virology. One of such institutes is the Manipal Centre for Virus Research (recognized under the Manipal University, Karnataka) which offers four seats under the degree of Masters of Science in Clinical Virology. The course has been specifically designed to address the research & other diagnostic requirements.
Some time back, students used to go abroad to pursue such specialized courses, which eventually contributed to heavy brain drain from India. Dr. G. Arunkumar, Head, Manipal Centre for Virus Research says, “With the introduction of this course, the rate of such students is expected to go down.” He further added that graduates in life sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology & medicine are eligible to apply for this course.
