Maharashtra: State medical colleges to add 601 more PG seats in 2022-23

Maharashtra government has proposed to increase the number of PG seats in state medical colleges for 2022-23.  As per the proposal, a total of 601 more PG seats will be added in PG courses across 15 medical colleges across the state.

There is good news for medical aspirants who seek admission in PG courses at Maharashtra medical colleges as the state government has proposed to increase the number of seats. As per the proposal, a total of 601 seats will be added up to the existing number of seats in MD/MS courses for 2022-23 academic session.

The seats will be increased across 15 medical colleges on the basis of their current infrastructure. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has already given its consent of affiliation to the proposal to increase 23 percent PG seats. Out of these 601 seats, 577 seats have been proposed in government medical colleges and rest in civic-run colleges in Pune.

JJ Hospital’s Grant Medical Colleges will add 92 more seats while B J Medical College in Pune will have an increase of 63 seats in 15 subjects. The new seats will be added up in courses like general surgery, anesthesia, community medicine, and pathology.

The proposal of increasing PG seats has already been sent to the National Medical Commission (NMC). The proposal is to introduce postgraduate medical courses in government medical colleges (GMCs) in Chandrapur, Jalgaon and Gondia. Some colleges which currently offer only undergraduate courses will also get some seats in PG courses.

Responding to the development to add seats in medical colleges, Dr T P Lahane, director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) was quoted as saying, “More PG seats will add to our manpower. We have proposed to to increase the seats by almost 25% in colleges which meet the NMC criteria for beds and faculty.”
