MBBS seats, PG Medical seats increased drastically between 2014 to 2020: MoS Health
Recently, Minister of State (MoS) Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar informed Rajya Sabha that the number of MBBS seats in India has increased by 53.22 per cent and the number of PG Medical seats has increased by 80 per cent between the period of 2014 to 2020.
"The number of MBBS seats in the country has increased by 53.22 % from 54,348 seats in 2014 to 83,275 seats in 2020 and the number of PG seats has increased by 80% from 30,191 seats in 2014 to 54,275 seats (including DNB & CPS seats) in 2020."
She said this while replying to the question that with out of the box thinking to prepare for future India, whether the huge increase in the number of medical and nursing seats in private and government colleges are compulsory.
She stated that the pandemic has reaffirmed the significance of the adequate number of qualified and trained people in the health sector.
There are currently 558 medical colleges are functioning in India with an intake capacity of 83,275 MBBS seats and 42,720 PG seats. Out of 558, 289 colleges are controlled by the government and 269 colleges are in the private sector.
