NEET 2020: Divided Opinion on Current Exam Dates
A letter from IWPA, demanding cancellation of NEET 2020, has reignited the old debate on whether or not it should be conducted during COVID-19 pandemic. Read more here.
NEET 2020 exam dates have been postponed twice this year. Owing to the COVID-19 situation in India, the examination, which was originally scheduled to be held on May 3, was first pushed to July 26. Following mass protests from the students against conducting NEET 2020 amidst an ongoing pandemic, NEET 2020 exam date was further pushed to September 13.
However, the student community and their parents are still unhappy with these dates. As the number of active cases in India increases each day, the fear of catching the dreaded virus on the exam day also increases. This has led to the second wave of protests, demanding the authorities to postpone NEET 2020 further.

However, this is not a common consensus. There are many students who want NEET 2020 to be held on the scheduled date, September 13. These students feel that the examination can be conducted on the scheduled date if WHO guidelines are followed religiously. They feel that any further delay in the NEET exam date 2020 will only cause demotivation and anxiety in the students who have spent years preparing for this entrance test.
Both sides have taken to Twitter, to express their concerns and thoughts about NEET 2020. A group of parents has also written to the HRD Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, demanding cancellation of NEET 2020. India Wide Parents Association (IWPA) stated in the letter that the current situation is not conducive for conducting exams of this scale and pose a risk to all those who will appear for this examination. In response to the above letter, both student communities have begun expressing their concerns more fiercely on social media platforms.

The concerns of both sides are valid, however, only one can win this battle. There are many questions that need to be answered by the authorities and many that NEET 2020 aspirants must ask themselves. Is postponing NEET 2020 the solution to all the problems? Can we say with certainty that the threat will diminish by December? Will the cancellation of NEET 2020 be fair to those who have spent years preparing for it? Will it be just to admit students on the basis of Class 12 marks, given the disparity in the Indian education system?
