The National Medical Council (NMC) is likely to conduct the National Exit Test (NeXT) exam for final year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students from 2023.

NeXT (National Exit Test) will be an online exam and the question will be based on the undergraduate syllabus of the medical programs. The exam will consist of only MCQ-type questions.

The National Medical Commission Bill, 2019, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2019, by former Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan.

As per reports, broad modalities of the NeXT exam have been finalized.

The exam is to award practicing licenses for medicine and surgery students, who have cleared MBBS studies and are doing medical internships. It will also likely replace National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) PG and serve as an entrance test for admission to PG medical degree programs.

It is being said that the decision is as per the central government's overall plan for one nation and one exam.

As per TOI, the decision was taken on June 10 during a meeting held by the Union ministry of health and family welfare. The meeting was to review the work of the National Medical Commission, India's medical education regulator.
