The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh have left medical aspirants in a fix due to overlapping of date of entrance tests for admission to their postgraduate courses, reported Hindustan Times.

The recent admission notices of both AIIMS and PGIMER mention November 18 as the date for the entrance examination for admission to MD/MS courses. These institutes are among the most sought-after for PG studies in medical science, and the entrance test clash would impact many aspirants. The session will start from January 2013.

More than 5,000 aspirants compete for 200 seats in 20 specialities and super-specialities at the PGIMER while the number of candidates at AIIMS is even higher. The two institutes are highly competitive with each other in various specialties for post-graduation.

A PGIMER spokesperson told HT that their examination date was fixed about a year ago and as AIIMS announced its schedule only recently, AIIMs is expected to have adjusted the date accordingly.  If both the institutes decide to stick to the same date, it would not only disappoint aspirants but also put the career of hundreds of students at stake.

Students will get more options in the future as six AIIMS-like institutions are being established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Of these, AIIMS Jodhpur and AIIMS Bhopal are starting their maiden academic sessions this week. Postgraduate courses at AIIMS Bhopal are expected to begin after six months. The other four institutes are coming up at Bhubaneswar, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh.
