PM asks for priority resolution of OBC, EWS reservation issue
Prime Minister Modi has reviewed the Other Backward Class (OBC) and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation in the all-India quota (AIQ) of medical education. He has asked the concerned ministries to resolve the issue on priority.
Serious concerns are being raised from student groups and Madras high court on the implementation of the reservation. The government has assured the Madras High court that the decision on OBC reservation in medical admissions in state government colleges is at its advanced stage and further details will be shared with the high court on August 2.
The government push on the issue is also being seen as the political movement in the wake of the upcoming elections in UP and other states. PM has also directed the concerned ministry to review how the EWS reservation for medical education is being implemented by the states.
The AIQ seats were created in 1984 in direction of the Supreme Court. As per the directions, all states were needed to surrender 50% postgraduate and 15% undergraduate medical and dental seats in state medical colleges to a central pool. In this quota, SC and ST classes are getting reservations but not the OBC categories.
