A former Madras High Court judge in his report submitted to the Tamil Nadu government has alleged that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) favours the affluent students.
AK Rajan in his report has stated that the majority of seats are taken by affluent students and there is not much scope for poor students. He has submitted his report to the state government in this regard.
As per Rajan, if NEET continued, the primary health care centres in rural Tamil Nadu will be devoid of doctors in the future. He said that the doctors from affluent backgrounds will not serve in remote areas, and they would prefer to go abroad, reported NDTV.
TN established a panel to study the impact of NEET and give necessary suggestions for safeguarding the interests of poor students from backward sections.
Rajan also said that before NEET was mandatory, more students from government schools were getting admission in medicine.
The majority of the political parties, including DMK and AIADMK, agree with Rajan.
All other states except TN have accepted NEET. However, Rajan said that other states will agree with him soon.
Moreover, Kalvi Pathukappu Kootamaippu (Education Protection Federation) released the results of a public opinion survey on the question ‘Does Tamil Nadu require NEET?’. Interestingly, 90 per cent of participants said the state doesn't require the NEET exam.
