Total Medical Colleges and MBBS Seats in India: Get State-wise list of MBBS Colleges and Seats
India has a total of 84,649 MBBS seats in 562 Medical Colleges currently, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choube recently said in the Parliament. He also provided statewise details of total number of MBBS seats citing data source of NMC.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choube recently provided the details about the total number of MBBS seats in medical colleges across country for the academic year 2020-21. He said the country has a total of 562 Medical Colleges currently including 286 government and 276 private institutes. Citing the data source of National Medical Commission, the Apex Medical Regulator, the Health Minister said there are 84,649 MBBS seats in 562 Medical Colleges in the country at the moment.
The Minister provided information about the total number of seats in Medical Colleges while participating during a recent Lok Sabha Session. He also provided details of statewise data of medical colleges, both government and private, and the total number of MBBS seats in those colleges.

As per the data, Karnataka tops the list of the state with maximum number of MBBS seats followed by Maharashtra , Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. 61 Medical Colleges of Karnataka have a total of 9445 seats. In Maharashtra, there are a total of 9180 MBBS seats across 60 Medical Colleges. Tamil Nadu which ranks third in the list, has 53 Medical Colleges with 8025 MBBS seats.
Uttar Pradesh’s 57 Medical Colleges offers 7975 MBBS seats while Gujarat’s 3o medical Colleges have 5700 seats.Chandigarh, Mizoram, and Andaman & Nicobar islands, have 1 Medical College each with 100 MBBS seats in their respective GMCs.The State of Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh have 1 Medical Colleges each with 50 seats.
Nagaland has no Medical College for students to study medicine currently.
The Health Minister also informed about the steps undertaken to increase the Medical seats in order to increase the overall number of doctors in the country. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the sole entrance test for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India at present. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET 2021 for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, Veterinary and other medical/paramedical courses in India.
