Union education minister informed Lok Sabha that the Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, platform has so far, 521 courses translated into vernacular languages.

SWAYAM MOOC online courses: In order to assist students in rural areas, the study material on the central government’s e-learning platform, SWAYAM is being translated into eight regional Indian languages. While talking about the introduced online courses, the Union education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ informed Lok Sabha on March 15 that the Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, platform has so far, 521 courses translated into vernacular languages. According to the reports, the minister said, “the highest number, 130 courses, have been translated into Hindi followed by Tamil with 94 courses. The online courses on SWAYAM are also available in other languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Telugu.”

The All India Council for Technical Education, or AICTE in May last year, invited applications from teachers and students who have completed SWAYAM courses to translate the courses.

Students get a wide range of online courses in disciplines such as science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, law and management among others on the e-learning platform SWAYAM. The central government launched this platform with an aim to facilitate easy access to education for students, particularly from rural areas. An official letter by Anil Sahasrabuddhe states, “the platform facilitates education in respect of fundamental prerequisite technical courses of first-year or courses in which failure rate is high”.

Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked for contributions from institutions and academics for the government's platform for online learning, SWAYAM. UGC has sought “expression of interest” has been asked by from faculty members and institutions for designing and offering 194 undergraduate (UG) courses from the humanities and social sciences and 155 UG courses from the sciences. The subjects it is seeking courses in include geography, psychology, economics, English, Hindi and Sanskrit for humanities and social science streams.
