After medical students were found Covid positive in Karnataka, now as many as 68 nursing students in Ballari are tested Covid-19 positive.
Around 400 nursing students had come to Ballari, Karnataka, from outside for writing examinations, and around 68 of them are found to be Covid-19 positive on Tuesday.
As per the information by local authorities, these nursing students had come from northern states like Uttar Prades, Bihar, Haryana and other states without the valid RT-PCR negative report obtained within the past 72 hours.
To ensure that the students are not infected with coronavirus, the district administration had sent the students' throat swabs to the laboratory for tests. After the test came as positive, the infected students were isolated and separate arrangements were made for them to write the examination.
The police have also booked cases against 13 colleges and hotels for giving accommodation to students without asking them to produce negative RT-PCR reports. The booked nursing colleges and hotels under various sections of National Disaster Management are Indian Nursing College, Puja School of Nursing, Ne Era Nursing College, Karnataka Nursing College, Sharabeshwara Nursing College, Best School of Nursing, Marched Residency, Vidya Comforts, Vishnu Priya Lodge, Chalukya Lodge, BDDS, Amala Nivas, Indian Nursing College, Puja School of Nursing, and Mata Function Hall, as reported by The Hindu.
The cases came to light at a time when the Ballari and Vijayanagara districts are already reporting a high number of cases for the last week. Ballari district reported 532 cases and Vijayanagara reported 182 cases on Tuesday. In Ballari district, Ballari taluk reported the maximum number of cases, that is 378, and Sandur reported 113 cases.
Recently, Ballari Deputy Commissioner Pavan Kumar Malapati, in a video conferencing, had briefed Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai about the Covid-19 situation and the containment measures taken in the district to curb the spread of the virus. As per him, the arrival of workers from outside the state to the Jindal Steel factory is the main reason for the sudden spike in cases.
