Mumbai University BMS Nomenclature change was requested by the colleges to avoid AICTE regulations. Consequently, the change of name was ratified by the University of Mumbai, a day before admission for the academic session 2024-25 began.

Mumbai University BMS Course Rename as BCom

The University of Mumbai (MU) has permitted the affiliated colleges to rename the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) course as BCom (Management Studies). Reportedly, several colleges were unwilling to follow All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) regulations and requested Mumbai University to rename the BMS course nomenclature.

Further, the circular states that colleges who wish to continue calling the BMS programme as BMS need to obtain prior approval from AICTE.

Admission Criteria

The colleges which select the nomenclature BCom (Management Studies) will accept students based on class 12 scores while colleges that wish to continue called by the old name will accept students based on scores of the common entrance test organised by State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell) as reported by Hindustan Times.

Further, the authorities mentioned that the BMS Syllabus will continue under the new name from the academic session 2024-25.

New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 Regulation

As per the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, AICTE will regulate all the professional courses in the country such as Bachelor in Management Students (BMS), Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA). Several colleges opposed this decision as fulfilling AICTE regulations is very difficult, especially in rural areas. Consequently, at present, these programmes are overseen by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and colleges have to get prior approval from their affiliating university to run the programme.
