Students Rally for Postponement of ICAI Exams Coinciding with General Elections 2024: Urgent Appeal Reaches Prime Minister's Office

Amidst growing concerns over the scheduling clash between the impending Chartered Accountancy exams and the Lok Sabha Elections, students have penned an appeal to the Prime Minister's Office, urging intervention for the postponement of exams. With exams slated from May 2nd to May 17th, directly overlapping with the democratic process from May 19th to June 4th, students stress the importance of ensuring both academic fairness and civic engagement.

In a recent statement, Advocate Anubha Shrivastava Sahai has brought attention to a significant scheduling conflict concerning the upcoming Chartered Accountancy exams and the Lok Sabha Elections. The exams, slated to occur between May 2nd and May 17th, directly coincide with the critical period of democratic participation from May 19th to June 4th. Sahai highlighted this juxtaposition, raising questions about the decision-making process, particularly when compared to other professional exams like the CMA and CS, which have been scheduled after the elections.

Students across the nation have voiced their concerns regarding this overlap, emphasizing the infringement upon their constitutional right to vote. One student expressed, β€œICAI doesn't care about 2 lac+ students' constitutional right...every single student has the right to vote. This is unfair to schedule exams during elections.” Another student echoed similar sentiments, stating, β€œEven though casting a vote is a fundamental right of our democratic society, I don't think students would cast their votes...especially during exam times, 99% of the students would prefer to stay home & cover as much of the portions as they can.”

Their concerns extend beyond mere inconvenience. Students argue that the stress of exams, combined with the pressure to perform well academically, makes it challenging to prioritize voting. Many may find themselves far from their hometowns or exam centers, further complicating their ability to participate in the democratic process.

Despite widespread appeals for reconsideration, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) proceeded with announcing revised exam dates on March 19th. The new schedule maintains the exams from May 2nd to May 17th, 2024, with specific groups scheduled on different dates. However, discontent among students persists, with many feeling that their concerns about mental well-being and democratic participation have been disregarded.

In response to these developments, the Chartered Accountancy Student Community has drafted a letter to the Prime Minister's Office, urging for the postponement of the May 2024 exams. They argue that the current scheduling conflict unfairly places students in a position where they must choose between academic commitments and civic duties, undermining the principles of democracy.

Despite these challenges, students remain hopeful for a resolution that prioritizes both their academic aspirations and democratic rights.

Achar sanhita stoppes all hurdles to that student. He will give vote only. No canvassing, nothing to do except just a vote.
